Before You Begin

Prerequisites

  • Number line (Class VI)
  • Basic geometry — lines and directions
  • Positive and negative numbers

Have Ready

  • 🔧Graph paper
  • 🔧Ruler
  • 🔧Coloured pencils for quadrant marking

Exercise Topic Map

Exercise 3.1 Identify the quadrant from signs of (x,y); recall: Q1(+,+), Q2(−,+), Q3(−,−), Q4(+,−)
Exercise 3.2 Plot ordered pairs; move x units along x-axis first, then y units parallel to y-axis

Key Formulae — Recall Before Solving

\(\text{Point } (x, y): x = \text{abscissa (horizontal)},\; y = \text{ordinate (vertical)}\)
\(\text{Q1: }(+,+),\; \text{Q2: }(-,+),\; \text{Q3: }(-,-),\; \text{Q4: }(+,-)\)
\(\text{On x-axis: } y=0;\quad \text{on y-axis: } x=0;\quad \text{origin: } (0,0)\)

NCERT Solving Method

Step 1 — Read the coordinate pair (x, y) carefully; x is the horizontal movement, y is vertical. Step 2 — Determine quadrant using the sign rule: both positive → Q1; x negative → Q2 or Q3 etc. Step 3 — Plotting: start at origin; move right/left by |x| units; then up/down by |y| units; mark the point. Step 4 — Points on axes: if x=0, point is on y-axis; if y=0, point is on x-axis. Step 5 — Collinear points lie on the same line; verify by checking if they form a straight path on graph paper.
